Subject: [ferrethealth] Food for Ferret with repeated Fungal/yeast infection
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I have a 6 year old female ferret that has had an issue with yeast infections in her bowels for a couple of years. She has been on a week per month regime of Fluconazole. Lately, she has been sleeping a lot over the last 2-3 months, generally getting up for 20 minutes 2 times per day.

- She has been checked for low blood sugar which included a 4+ hour fast and she was fine.

- She was checked for Valley fever and that was negative

Whenever she gets multiple days of Fluconazole, she becomes more active. She also went on inconazole, but she showed no change from the getting up for 20 minutes 2 times per day.

At this point, it was decided, with our vet, to put her and our other ferret on Fluconazole for a week and I put a new method of cleaning into effect. I have always been clean with the ferrets, but I went to the extent of thoroughly cleaning everything the ferrets have, not only dumping the kibble each day, but also washing the bowl each day, doing a clean of the entire water bottle rather than just changing the water.

There has been some improvement, but it looks like I may have to go to the second phase: the food.

She and the other ferret are on Totally Ferret. I am ordering some EVO Ferret in at a small pet shop here in Tempe, Arizona. The EVO does not have brewers yeast, which may cause part of the issue. I know that I can not put her on a true raw diet. I may try some cooked meat diet as part of the plan, but in Arizona, even inside, I do not to leave cooked meat out for more than 30 minutes. Therefore, I must get opinions mainly on dry based diets.

I am looking for high protein, non-brewer yeast kibble. Any without gluten may be a positive idea, since gluten may also be an issue. What is out there?

Regards,
Shawn
Tempe, Arizona
