Subject: [ferrethealth] Wasps as possible disease carriers?
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
G'day,
Can European wasps which feed on carrion pick up disease organisms and later deposit them on pet food? I'm referring to a mysterious disease outbreak amongst ferrets. Wasps are very numerous in the area.
Major clinical signs: loss of appetite, severe breathing difficulties, screaming as if in pain(or panic)kidney and liver failure, some ferrets with diarrhoea, four deaths, some with milder symptoms survived.
Regards,
Ben
[The symptoms tell very little.
What are the CBCs and Chem Panel results for these
ferrets. How many have had necropsies with tissues
sent out for pathology and what were the results?
Was toxicology also done on any? Results? Were
x-rays or ultrasound or both done and results?
What ages are the ferrets? Genders? Markings/
coloration?
Do they share a common origin, share a home, or
have something else in common?
Have other species they've been exposed to been ill?
What are the timings and order of the onset of
symptoms? You mention failure of the kidneys
and livers. How did they test during illness and
how did they appear after death?
There are likely to be more common causes than
wasp-borne carrion traces, but if that is a concern
how about using screens to keep them away?
