My vet likes to start them on the Lupron, which is a Depot by the way at just under a year old if possible as a preventative. A depot medication simply means it is injected into a place in the body from where it can be distributed by dissolving slowly over a period of time.

He gives 100 mcg during the normal breeding season (Jan. - Mar.)as a one shot dose.

Melatonin dose is 1mg given 7-9 hours after sunrise. Check the dosage of the melatonin you get because there are different formulations. I don't know if melatonin is used as a prophylactic but perhaps someone else will know.
