Subject: [ferrethealth] Tufts protocol, administering med
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

My 4 yr old ferret, Hershey, is undergoing the Tufts protocol and she is in week 16 which calls for daily dose, for two weeks, of Procarbazine. It came in a way too high dose for her so we had a compounding pharmacy divide it and place it into small capsules, about the size of a benedryl capsule. I am having difficulty in getting this into her. In the past 4 days I have ruined more capsules than I have gotten into her. I have tried scruffing her with one hand, opening the jaws and placing the capsule in the back of her throat with the other but she gags about the time I am removing my fingers and the capsule is then pushed to the front of the mouth and it, at that point, is starting to melt, for lack of a better term, Last night I had a friend scruff her while I used two hands but still had difficulty though we had ultimate success. My question to anyone who has dealt with this before, did you have the drug divided and capsulized or did you do it another way. Any advice w
ould be welcomed. I still have 10 days left for this cycle and then, horrors, we have to do it again in 9 weeks for 14 days again. I really need a better way to give this and hopefully the answer is out there. The good news is she is responding wonderfully to the protocol with no ill effects. Masses on xrays at the beginning of treatment were gone by 7 weeks when re-xrayed.

Thanks in advance,
Ann and Hershey, who are very stressed by this.
