Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Lupron and Melatonin as Preventatives
To: <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>
Thanks for replying and I apologize for the confusion by writing depot instead of monthly. What I meant to write was the 4 month depot instead of the 1 month depot.
I read in the archives that Lupron was being given in the spring but found a message by Dr. Murray that states it should be given year round, so this may be helpful and of interest to you as well.

I also found these by Dr. Murray, which is why I plan to give Melatonin.

Thanks again.

[Yes, latitude might affect how well Lupron works as
a preventative and areas closer to the Equator might
call for always being on the med while in latitudes
far from the Equator Spring may be sufficient.

My vet likes to start them on the Lupron, which is a Depot by the way at just
under a year old if possible as a preventative. A depot medication simply means
it is injected into a place in the body from where it can be distributed by
dissolving slowly over a period of time.
He gives 100 mcg during the normal breeding season (Jan. - Mar.)as a one shot
dose.
Melatonin dose is 1mg given 7-9 hours after sunrise. Check the dosage of the
melatonin you get because there are different formulations. I don't know if
melatonin is used as a prophylactic but perhaps someone else will know.
