OR they may at times merely share a common cause.

For a long time it was thought that adrenal disease
caused bone loss. Later it was found that lower
circulating natural melatonin levels (produced in
response to enough darkness, so more light reduced
the levels) not only resulted in the LH output increase
that lies behind adrenal disease, but also causes an
increase in FSH output and FSH increases can cause
an increase in bone loss. So, it wasn't the adrenal
disease, but a common trigger was ultimately involved.

We've had some ferrets who got "rat tail" regularly or
even perpetually who NEVER had adrenal disease. Our
rate of adrenal disease in our family is pretty consistently
about 1/3 of them. For a very long time almost every
one of our ferrets was used in necropsies with pathology
done to help train vets and techs. We had one case of
hidden, completely asymptomatic adrenal disease found
that way after the fact, BTW. Still, 2/3rds didn't have any
adrenal disease, not macroscopically nor microscopically,
though some of those had rat tail.

There are certainly other hormonally active parts of the
body, as well.
