Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Looking for ferret vet with ferret size endoscope........RESOLVED!!!
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I am very pleased to announce that we found a vet who had a small enough
scope only 80 miles away!! After many phone calls and e-mails, and an
offer to do the proceedure in PA, we found one in our own Lexington, KY.

We arrived with Zeus and his sets of x-rays, regular and barium and his
history. He still had an IV cath in his little leg.

The Dr. worked for almost an hour to grab the obstruction from his
esophagus and finally was able to pull it out w/o it slipping. Even
broke one of her small but expensive ($6,000) instruments in the
process but she shrugged that off and said that's what insurance is for!

When they were successful, they all cheered......and the receptionist
said she had never heard them do that before. The whole experience at
Animal Hospital made us feel like
Dr. was really invested in little Zeus and a positive
outcome. It was almost shocking ot have them walk out a little after an
hour later, without the need for a single incision, and hand us our
little fuzzy treasure. She gave me a huge hug.

And speaking of treasure.....Zeus' was of the plastic toy chicken
variety. Yup, this chicken toy which 12 other ferrets couldn't care
less about was for some reason a "must have" on Zeus' menu!! Two pieces
- one of which was round and hollow and maybe 1/2" long - so that it was
a perfect fit in the esophagus. The other piece was irregular and I
suspect it got stuck insode the round piece, causing the blockage. We
really don't think that if they had to try to push it down to the
stomach that they'd have been successful because of the shape.

Zeus had a good sleep on the way home - up twice to tinkle and managed
to take off his vet wrap from his IV site. He was VERY happy to have
some soupies when he got home. A little too happy - his mommy had to
hold him up a bit as he was eating it in giant gulping bites as opposed
to licks. He must have been so hungry.

Thank you to everyone for your referrals, thoughts and prayers.
Yesterday at this time we were really thinking this ferret would have to
be euthanized for lack of the right tools and several thousand dollars
which just broke our hearts. Tonight we're having to slow him down and
get our cuddles now - because tomorrow he won't stand for them anymore
I'm sure!!
