Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: suprelorin and adrenal question
To: <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>

My Golia is 6 years old (7 today) but has been operated so many times that
was weary of surgical removal of the gland. He's had several infections that
needed operating and he had a lymphonode removed and I forgotten some of the
other issues. His adrenal wasn't enlarged enormously and that's where I
decided that I wanted an implant of Deslorelin. I had also read that with
surgical removal the problem almost always reoccurs in the other gland. I
really didn't like the idea of another operation. He's doing fine at the
moment, his fur is pretty good and he plays and is lifely. The implant was
such a small intervention; like an injection and it's now 8 months ago and
I'm quite happy. Sometimes I think that in a few years time we might start
to think differently about surgical removal of the gland, maybe opt more
often for the implant. At the moment it's still quite new but in the end.
These operations are also quite a stress for the ferret.

I'm also changing slightly the idea of the vaccines repeated every year. I
'm obliged to vaccine my adopted ferrets every year but Golia is my first
ferret from a private breeder and I am more and more convinced that after
years of vaccines the ferrets get immune for life. I read reports from vets
that have some experience and did some tests on ferrets that had only been
vaccinated a few times in there lifes and seemed to be still protected. I'm
also on a list for skunk owners and they warn against 'over vaccination'.
Golia had his vaccines all the years from when he was very small and I think
I'm not going to vaccine him anymore.

It might be interesting to see what you have got to say on this subject,
anybody read reports, researches on this subject? ( I apoligise if this has
already been discussed many times, lately I didn't have much time to follow
the list)

Greetings Anja.
