Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Possible spinal cord injury - suggestions??
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I will be receiving 2 surrenders within a couple of days. One is a 3
=BD year-old male who appears to have sustained some kind of injury.
The owner found him when he came home from work and the ferret was not
able to move his hind legs and was incontinent, and unable to void on
his own. He was taken to the Emergency Clinic where fortunately my vet
was working a shift.

X-rays were taken and nothing conclusive showed on the x-rays in terms
of possible spinal injury, uroliths, etc. He was left for the weekend
at the Emergency Clinic and was transferred to my vet's clinic
Monday morning. He has been receiving Dexamethasone injections and is
now showing response in his rear legs. However, still can't walk on
them and remains incontinent and his bladder has to be expressed
manually.

My vet has determined that his condition is due to an injury from the
presenting clinical symptoms. He thinks that it is possible that he may
recover because he is legs are showing response to deep pain testing.
However, it will be many weeks before we'll know for certain. He
has also developed an ulcer and has pronounced scalding on his abdomen
from his incontinence. Poor little guy is pretty miserable.

The owner is distraught but his girlfriend is not an animal person and
she told me herself that she is not a fan of ferrets. Of note she did
nothing for the ferret before the owner returned home.

I would like to know whether anyone has had experience with such an
injury and what the outcome was; and any suggestions for care, medical
and otherwise, of this little guy would be greatly appreciated.

Tressie
