Subject: [ferrethealth] Coco's lethargy and bloodwork
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Coco is a 3 yr old spayed female. Sunday she was bouncing around as usual but Monday morning she didn't want to play at all. She had no interest in doing her favorite things and little interest in food, she just wanted to go back in the cage to sleep. At about 5pm I checked on her again and let her out and she was the same, she hid under a blanket under the bed which she never does. She would look alert and bright eyed one second, then her expression would quickly change to slightly lowered ears and half closed eyes. I called the vet and we took her in for an exam and bloodwork at 7pm.

Her temperature was normal, but her stool was loose. In her stool sample they found a clostrium organism, which they said is normal in low numbers but put her on flagyl.

They took blood for a bg and cbc. Her glucose was 120. The abnormal values in the bloodwork are:

Hemoglobin HIGH 21.3 (13-18)g/dL
Hematocrit HIGH 60.8 (43-55)%
RBC HIGH 12.8 (6.5-11)10^6/uL
Platelet Count LOW 228 (300-700)10^9/uL
Total Protein LOW 4.8 (5.5-7.6)g/dL
Globulin LOW 2.4 (2.9-4.9)d/dL

Albumin is at the lower number in the range, 2.4 g/DL. (2.4-4.5)
Phosphorus and Potassium are also a little under the range.

The vet said that the Hemoglobin, Hematocrit and RBC might be high because she was dehydrated, but that leaves her a little more concerned about the protein levels that may then be lower in actuality and recommended rechecking in 6 weeks.

Coco had subq fluids before leaving the vet last night. Today she was better, she was curious and wanted food, but she isn't bouncing.

Is there anything else I could/should be doing or something the bloodwork is reflecting that we aren't seeing?

Thanks for any input!
Jaime
