Subject: [ferrethealth] Sick Ferret... need advice
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
I woke up today and my male ferret, he's about 14 months old, not only looked a bit odd but was definitely not acting right. Usually when I get up and let him and my other ferret out of their cage they are excited and ready to play. I noticed his sides sunken in. And the first thing he did was lay flat on my kitchen floor. After a few mins I picked him up and it appeared to me anyway that his ribcage was puffed out. When I picked him up he immediately started to fall asleep in my arms. So I of course panic. I called the vet and rushed him over. I've had both my ferrets since they were babies and never had any illnesses to deal with. Now here's my problem, I live in a small town in Alaska and there aren't many vet practices here. Not only that but ones that will see ferrets. The tech that examined my ferret didnt' notice anything out of the ordinary. *sigh* So basically the vet visit was not helpful. After a lot of my insisting something was wrong w/ my ferret the tech gave me
some antibiotics (Metronidazole) and told me to bring a stool sample. Many hours later now my ferret is not drinking, not eating. I'm getting pretty upset and not really sure what to do next. Trying to look up illnesses w/ ferrets and quite a few things have similar symptoms. He doesn't have any discharge from his mouth, eyes or nose. The vet tech took his temperature at least and said it was low at 99.2 degrees. So if anyone has any ideas I'd greatly appreciate it.
