To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Pretty well correct except that my vet attended a recent conference and it was recommended that both adrenals should be removed irrespective of whichever one is obviously affected. He is following this new protocol in his clinical practice.

Also follow-up for signs of Addison's Disease after adrenalectomy.

[In the U.S. it is common practice that if both adrenals
have to come out, or if one may be atrophied, or may have
been suppressed for either electrolyte testing to be
done on a RIGOROUS schedule, or either Percorten
shots and daily Prenisolone, or daily Fludrocort and
Prednisolone to be used. Addisons crises can hit
pretty fast in some ferrets rather than a steady decline
and are fatal if not treated fast enough.

Whether to remove both if one is diseased or not to do
so is a topic that has been debated for a number of years
among the experts.
