Angela Lennox, DVM, Dipl ABVP will be presenting a case study of Hypothyroidism in an Obese Pet Ferret at the 30th Annual Association of Avian Veterinarians Conference & Expo in August.
I am following this very closely because I suspect one of mine has hypothyroidism.
Dr. Cheryl Greenacre, University of Tennessee has also conducted studies of ferrets and hypothyroidism. I haven't seen any publications yet.
There is some thinking that thyroid conditions may be part of the MEN complex (multiple endocrine neoplasia) and some vets suspect that hypoT4 exists in ferrets. However, there aren't enough studies done yet to determine what would be considered normal ranges and therefore, rendering a definitive diagnosis is, at this early stage challenging, if not impossible.
