Subject: Bilateral adrenalectomy, yes or no? Re: [ferrethealth] Digest Number 1545
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I have relayed this information to my vet. He's feeling very hopeful that Deslorelin will be a viable alternative to surgery.

The first ferret in Atlantic Canada to receive a Deslorelin implant was my foster Peanut, who received her implant yesterday. My vet took numerous pictures and measured her vulva so that we can track her progress on the Deslorelin. One of my personal ferrets also received a Deslorelin implant yesterday and two more have appointments next week.

Peanut has been on Lupron Depot and oral Melatonin since last September when she was surrendered. While her hair has filled out, her vulva diminishes in size following a Lupron injection but has never returned to a normal size. It will be interesting to see how she does on the Deslorelin.

I noted today that she has speckles on her vulva, which she always gets just before her vulva starts to get smaller on Lupron.

For other Canadians - the cost to me, which included office visit, Deslorelin implant, Isuflorane sedation and taxes (14% here in Nova Scotia) came to $147.42 (Canadian) per ferret.

The cost to the clinic for ten implants was $250.00 plus $80.00 freight from Australia. They should have arrived within a week but got lost and ended up kicking around the U.S. before being redirected to Canada. The shipper had not addressed them properly.
