A quick google search came up with this: ( gotta love google)
http://emedicine.medscape.com/article/761367-overview
which basically says 5ml /kg of air to cause significant problem, in a standard peripheral IV ( not one that may be a central line in the neck, etc). I have seen 1-3ml/kg quoted as well, but it does say most small amounts of air is broken up in the circulation so doesn't cause problems.
Your ferret is about .75kg, and so about 1ml of air at the lower end to probably more like 3ml could cause an issue. That would probably be more than a few inches in a thin IV tubing ( would have to know more info like diameter of the tubing, etc).

Subject: [ferrethealth] Air in an IV line?
Recently, I visited a 7 year old ferret of mine who was spending the night at her vet, post surgery. I noticed 2 inches of air in her IV line, about 2 feet from her IV port, and brought it to a tech's attention. I was first assured the amount air would be fine but the tech flushed the line for me, anyway. Monkey Shines is recovering well at home now, so no harm done, even if there was any risk from the air.
My question is this, how much air is safe in an IV line for a ferret? I know it's preferable not to have any at all, but does anyone know if that 2 inches of air bubble would have caused Monkey any problems? She weighs about a pound and a half. I don't know what the flow rate was set for.
