Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Spontaneous Diabetes
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I had a female ferret who suddenly developed diabetes secondary to receiving prednisilone. I can't remember what her glucose was specifically but I checked her urine several times a day with the glucose/ketone strips and for several days her urine registered at the high end of the strips, so she was spilling large amounts of ketones. We, of course, took her off the pred, started insulin injections which we divided the daily dose into 3 injections, 8 hours apart, instead of the traditional 2. We felt this kept it in her system longer and at a more steady level. We also gave her MD kibble, by Hills I think. Anyway it was a prescription diet specifically for diabetes. I'm thinking I also supplemented with chicken baby food too, to keep food in her. Casey was the first ever diabetic ferret my vet had ever treated. I know usually diabetes is hard to treat in ferrets but we were successful with the above and when we finally got her glucose where it should be, it stayed ther
e and we were able to get her off the insulin, since, as I stated above, her diabetes was as a result of pred. If memory serves this lasted for a couple of months. Unfortunately she could never take pred after that, at least in any dose that would help her and she eventually got lymphoma and I lost her to that. Just thought I would pass this experience along, in case something here helps you with your baby.
