Cadmium appears to be at least one that does. Solder contains high levels of cadmium. Was there any welding done in the vicinity of their environment. Do you live anywhere near an industrial site or smelter? Nickel-cadmium batteries are another source and there are several manufacturers of these in Australia - is there one near you?

Perhaps contacting someone who is an expert in ferret toxicology might offer other plausible toxins that would cause similar symptoms.
