Could your ferrets be chewing cigarette butts? The nicotine is toxic, Dogs may not be interested in the butts, but to ferrets, they can be chewy treats. Is it possible that they could be flicked over the fence or something similar that the dogs may not take an interest in? You may have to check your yard really close. I had a cousin who lost a little buddy due to chewing on butts.
