Subject: [ferrethealth] The importance of vaccinations
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hi, everyone,

I received a few e-mails from people advising me not to vaccinate my
ferrets at all and telling me how much greater the risk of the
vaccinations are than the diseases. Folks, IMNSHO that is absolutely
awful advice!

Distemper is nearly 100% fatal in ferrets and is a truly horrible
death. So long as my ferrets go out of the house they are at risk.
No, I wouldn't ever consider not vaccinating unless our vet advised
it. The only ferret who won't be vaccinated next year is Ella, and
she will be at least eight years old. In her case that is truly a
pity, too. She is still very active and playful. She has always been
very affectionate towards people in general and never bites, making
her the perfect ferret for education days and similar events.

I agree that the risk of rabies is very low. Not vaccinating for
rabies is illegal here. G-d forbid if one of my ferrets gently
mouthed someone and was accused of "biting" they would be killed
(tested for rabies) if they weren't vaccinated. Thanks, but no
thanks.

My only advice is that people wait a good long while before leaving
the vet's office after vaccinations.

Regards,
Caity and the terrific trio (Ella, Zephyr and Chin Soon)
