One of mine does that regularly during shedding season. My vet basically told me that sometimes they get fur caught in their throats, and have a lot of trouble getting it out.
Had it continued, we'd have done xrays, but shortly after shedding season stopped, so did she.
The only thing that seemed to help my little girl with the wheeze/cough was for me to syringe a wee bit of water from the side of her mouth. I kept giving pumpkin throughout, though.
