NPH is a faster acting insulin, while glargine is a longer acting insulin. My cat is currently on Lantus (glargine) and I've had a good experience with it. The FHL archives have some information, but you may also want to try digging around http://www.felinediabetes.com a little. While ferrets are clearly not cats, there is a lot of information that applies to both species there (types of insulin and how they work, info about testing blood glucose at home, diet, etc) and lots of folks on the message boards who know a lot about diabetes management in general. I know there is another ferret owner on there, and I believe she's around here too (Deb and Pippin, are you out there?)
I'm not a vet nor an expert on diabetes in ferrets, but my understanding is that NPH isn't really the latest and greatest. You may want to talk to your vet about using Lantus or another similar insulin with a long lasting, smoother effect on blood glucose.
Hopefully someone else can help you out regarding the issue of what's going on overall...
Good luck!
