There must be something in the water.....we adopted a 6 month old female sa=
ble who needed a home on Tuesday.=A0 Today I took her in for distemper and =
rabies vaccinations.=A0 We pre-treated with Benadryl, yet she still had a r=
eaction to the distemper vaccine.=A0 Thankfully, we were all standing watch=
, waiting to see if anything was going to happen.=A0 Jezzie threw up a few =
times, but after the injections of dexamethasone, she stopped.=A0 She was v=
ery agitated for at least a couple of hours, but eventually calmed down.=A0=
I've had ferrets since 97 and this is the first reaction I've ever been th=
rough.=A0 Needless to say, the rabies vaccination will be done in a couple =
of weeks.=A0

[Moderator's Note:

That is sort of a borderline thing to happen
so could be a very strong end of the expected
response OR could be a mild reaction,
my inclination is to think the latter is more
likely if the vomiting was pronounced.=20

Many vets these days give Dex beforehand
instead of Benedryl since that seems to work
better.

We've begun having titers run before deciding
whether to give canine distemper vaccinations,
and with an adoptee whose vaccination history
is unknown that could be especially useful. Read
about that approach in:
http://www.ferret.org/news/07-april-titer_study.html
http://ferrethealth.org/archive/FHL9127
http://ferrethealth.org/archive/FHL9108
When doing that you also can help advance
the knowledge base. Make sure that Dr. Heller
gets all the info that she needs; send it to her
directly to help increase the needed database.=20

BTW, it always pays to avoid giving more than
one type of vaccine at a time. If nothing else at
least the cause of a reaction is then known when
one happens.]
