Just to cheer you all up I forgot to mention that the second time her glands were expressed I was holding her while the vet did the squeezing bit. We were both trying to see what was happening and were amply rewarded when there was a zzzt and we both received a direct shot the vet on his shirt and me on the face, on subsequent occassions
I never got so close.
