Subject: [ferrethealth] Lupron Depot - Possible adverse side effects?
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Trinity (Trinny), our oldest neutered female ferret, somewhere around 6 or 7, hasn't responded much at all to the 1.0 mg 4-month Lupron Depot and the melatonin implant that she received at the same time 3-1/2 weeks ago. This was her second round of each medicine. The first time around, approx. 4 months ago, she responded well to the Lupron and most of her symptoms (shakes, lethargy, moans and groans from discomfort) subsided considerably. She did well for a couple of months, but her fur loss never reversed. She's at least 80% bald now.

I am faced with the choice now of either doing nothing and watching her deteriorate, or trying another 1.0 mg, 4-month Lupron Depot shot to be given 4 weeks after the most recent one. My vet spoke with me for a long time today and has serious reservations about giving her a second shot just 4 weeks after the last, believing that it may cause more adverse side effects and quicken her decline. But I don't forsee Trinny being with us for much longer under the current circumstances, and I feel that with her quality of life diminishing, it is worth the risk of a second shot to try to buy her a few more months of happiness. My vet has consented to do it for me, but wanted me to understand that he does not recommend or endorse doing it.

My questions are: Would two 1.0 mg 4-month Lupron Depot shots given 4 weeks apart to a ferret of approximately 1.0 kg in weight be a serious health risk (more than the risk of just letting the adrenal disease continue to advance fairly rapidly)? And secondly, what might be the potential side effects of too much Lupron Depot in Trinny's system?

Any advice is certainly appreciated.
