Given how many human drugs have to be taken off the market in recent years when widespread use showed the dangers and side effects which didn't show up in trials, I'm not sure that I'd agree with you. I'd expect that human trials would be more heavily scrutinized than veterinary trials.
I do agree that long term studies and reaction rates on a sufficiently large and diverse population should be done, whether it's human or veterinary drugs, before potentially dangerous drugs are released to the open market. Given the cost of such studies, though, it seems this may not always be the case.
