A few references regarding glucagonoma being a cause of spontaneous Diabetes Mellitus in ferrets.
1. Ferrets, Rabbits, and Rodents: Clinical Medicine and Surgery. Quesenberry, Katherine E. & Carpenter, James W., Second Edition, page 88:
"Diabetes Mellitus in ferrets can be caused by a lack of insulin, insulin resistance, or a glucagonoma."
2. The 5-minute Veterinary Consult: Ferrets & Rabbits. Oglesbee, Barbara L. page 32. References anecdotal evidence of glucagonomas as a cause of DM in ferrets. Comm. with an FHL Vet re: communications by Exotics Consultants on the VIN message boards, stating their clinical experiences of seeing spontaneous diabetes mellitus in ferrets being caused by glucagonoma(s) and/or mixed glucagonoma/insulinomas *. NB: VIN Consultants are well-known and well-established Exotics and Small Mammal Medicine experts.
