We were told by a more experienced ferret vet that Lupron does sting going in, irrespective of the size of the needle and that some ferrets are more sensitive to the stinging than others.

It isn't the size of the needle or the location of the injection that causes the sting, it's the diluent (the fluid used to dilute the lupron powder). When sterile water is used, as it most often is with ferrets, it stings. When the proper diluent, which is included with the human dosage, is used there is no sting. The proper diluent adjusts PH, eliminating the sting.

For many years I used the 4 month depot, purchased from a pharmacy that sells ferret sized doses. This did not come with a diluent but rather instructions to dilute with sterile water. Every one of my ferrets reacted to the sting each time an injection was given, it was not a matter of sensitivity nor where the injection was given (IM or SQ, made no difference).

I'm now buying human doses that include the proper diluent. None of my ferrets react to this at all, they don't even blink.

The proper diluent contains....

Carboxymethylcellulose Sodium IP, Mannitol IP, Polysorbate 80 IP, Water for injection IP and Glacial Acetic Acid USP (for ph adjustment).

Aside from the sting on injection, I have never seen an adverse reaction to lupron in any of mine.

[IMPORTANT Moderator's Note:

A person would have to be sure that the human
type bought is a DEPOT (time release) version.
The 24 hour Lupron has the potential to actually
cause more problems. For those who need to
learn the difference see:

which has very important information.]
