Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: ferret with possible spinal injury - necropsy update
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

After several weeks I finally received the post-mortem report from the Atlantic Veterinary College on the 4 year old gib who was surrendered to us with ascending paralysis and incontinence.

The pathology report states that he had multicentric small cell sarcoma in his brain, spine, spleen and mesenteric lymph nodes. Differential diagnosis is lymphosarcoma.

The temporal lobe had loose sheets and clusters of neoplastic cells infiltrating the grey and white matter and extending into the adjacent leptomeninges.

There was a 3.5 cm mass attached to the root of the mesentery.

There were several raised nodular masses ranging in size from 5 mm to 2 cm scattered throughout the splenic parenchyma. The masses were poorly-defined non-encapsulated and composed of loose sheets of neoplastic round cells. The spleen contained random, scattered areas of necrosis characterized by loss of tissue architecture and replacement by homogeneous eosinophlic 'material.'

Rare, small clusters of mononuclear cells were found infiltrating multifocally within the meninges covering the spinal cord.
