Hi Janet,

My vet does use the Tennessee Panel because it is prohibitively expensive! True the test itself only costs $65.00 but getting it there is very expensive.

If my vet suspects adrenal disease from the clinical symptoms he gives a Lupron injection, which does no harm if it isn't adrenal disease. If it is things should improve unless the dose is too low.

I know some people prefer the 3 or 4 month Lupron but the one month is easier to monitor. My vet starts gibs on 200 mcg. one month dose, smaller females at 100 mcg.

The sexual behaviour you describe is one of the clinical symptoms of adrenal disease. You don't always see the entire cluster of symptoms early on in the disease. My 2 year-old gib was engaging in sexual behaviour, and then started losing hair on his tail. He was given a Lupron injection and the behaviour improved. However, because he was young and otherwise healthy I opted for adrenal surgery. His right adrenal was removed last July. Recently he's started showing signs again, presumably the left adrenal is now affected. He was given a Deslorelin implant and his behaviour has once again improved.

I would encourage you to find a ferret knowledgeable vet, someone experienced with adrenal disease.

In my opinion you don't need all the expensive diagnostics if you can find an experienced and knowledgeable ferret veterinarian. Try the Lupron in combination with Melatonin if you don't want to go for the surgery.

Tressie
