To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
Hi Janet,
YES, return of sexual behavior is a sign of adrenal gland
disease in ferrets. In one study (which Dr Bruce Williams did
the pathology for) the return of sexual behavior was linked to
carcinomas (ie the kind of tumor that can become really big).
Thus it is a sign that is linked to a serious problem and time to
consider surgery for Tug. You might want to use the vet school
at the University of Illinois and their famous surgeon Avery Bennett.
Another option would be Dr Richard Nye at the Midwest Bird
and Exotic Animal Hospital in Elmwood, IL.
If you decide to treat medically, then I would recommend using both
Lupron and melatonin implants to treat Tug and to hopefully prevent
his adrenal gland(s) from becoming large.
Hope that helps,
Jerry Murray, DVM
PS There is an article at FerretsMagazine.com on the ferret endocrine
system,
which covers both adrenal gland disease and insulinoma.
