Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Deslorelin Implant side effects?
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hi,

To date I've had four ferrets receive the Deslorelin implant - two to go.

Peanut, the 3 year-old sprite whose vulva never quite returned to normal on Lupron and Melatonin has had a profound reduction in the size of her vulva. No hair loss.

Sampson, my 4 year-old obese boy with a bazillion health issues, who never regrew his fur after a splenectomy in January is now sprouting fur on his bald belly but losing it on his tail.

Cannoli, my 3 year-old boy who had his right adrenal gland removed last July and who recently started showing adrenal symptoms again is losing the hair on his tail.

Linguini, my 5 1/2 year old sprite with EGE is growing hair back on her tail.

A friend whose two ferrets also received the Deslorelin implants are sprouting hair everywhere. One a 3 year-old male and the other a 6 1/2 year-old female with insulinoma.

As you can see there is a variety of responses. In my case it is the gibs who are losing tail hair and not the sprites. Neither one of my friend's ferrets has lost any more fur anywhere since receiving the Deslorelin implant.

My 2 Ohio rescues - sibling pair (their sister died of JL just before their second birthday) are both showing signs of adrenal disease i.e. mounting aggression and hair loss and will be getting Deslorelin implants. Of note, all three were late spays, and had at least one estrus cycle before being spayed. One at 7 months of age, the other two at 9 months of age. Not to draw any hard and fast conclusions from such a small sample but it would seem that late spay/neuter is no guarantee that they won't get adrenal disease.
