Subject: Re: [ferrethealth] Treatment for adrenal ferret
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I am one of those people who still believe that surgery is the only
cure for adrenal disease. That is the view shared by all of the vets
my ferrets have seen. Lupron is great for relieving the symptoms but
it doesn't remove the tumor.

In the ferrets I've had over the years surgery is generally curative.
The large majority never have had any recurrence of the disease. For
example, my ferret Ella had a left adrenalectomy on December 29, 2004.
She has had no significant health issues since and no further
symptoms of adrenal disease.

The big issue with adrenal surgery is making sure you have a vet who
is experienced and can handle a right adrenalectomy if needed. That
is a much more difficult surgery for both the vet and the ferret since
the vena cava is always involved. I've heard of some vets who have
had horrific rates of fatalities with right adrenal surgeries and
others who have had success rates over 90%, meaning that they can
remove the entire tumor and the ferret recovers well. I also know of
vets who will simply close if they find a right adrenal tumor; they
aren't comfortable removing it. I'd only take my ferrets to a vet
with an excellent reputation for successful adrenal surgeries
regardless of which gland is involved.

Good luck!

All the best,
Caity and the terrific trio
