Subject: [ferrethealth] bald spots
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
Greetings!
I am well versed in the signs of adrenal cancer....I has a ferret of my own that had it, and I read a lot of the posts that come through here on the topic. So, I know what I am about to describe very well could be adrenal.
My 3 yr old female has three bald spots on her neck. She also has thinning hair on her belly and feet, but she usually gets that this time of year. I know the bald spots are from me. One is from when her and I were playing....I pinch at her like a ferret would bite at her, and I got a tuft of fur out doing this once. She didn't even notice, but it bothered me. This was about 2 weeks ago. The other two happened last night....I had her scruffed so I could clean her ears (she hates it) and when I put her down, fur was still stuck to my fingers where she was scruffed, thus creating bald spots. When I look at the spots closely, I can see what appears to be hair wanting to grow in, but she is white and has very fine, soft fur so it is hard to tell. I seem to remember this sort of thing happening to her last summer, but it is so hard to remember EVERYTHING that goes on with her (she has what the vet and I believe is IBS so I pay a lot of attention to her daily activities to make sur
e she is ok). Perhaps I will start a journal....anyways, I was wondering if anyone has ever seen this sort of thing with their ferrets during seasonal shedding. It has been pretty warm in MN lately, and my duplex is difficult to keep cool (I do have AC and try to keep the house at 77F, but it gets expensive). My plan is to keep an eye on her, watch to see if the fur grows back and if any other adrenal symptoms pop up. Her vulva is normal and she does not seem aggressive. I did read some posts on the archive though stating that hair loss can come and go with adrenal, so I guess I just don't know what to think. I know I could take her in for the tennesse panel, but I have heard that gives false positives. Any advice/opinions are welcome.
