Subject: [ferrethealth] Adopting sick ferret, need suggestions on what he might have
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

First off, just joined the group. :)

Ok, I am adopting 2 male ferrets from someone off craigs list.

These ferrets were rehomed with someone else before i got a chance to respond to her ad. But, the were neglected, no food, no water, and a very unlivable disgusting cage. Once the original owner saw this on a trip to visit them, she immediatly took them back, and straight to the vet. One ferret is fine... but the other has had problems ever since. He had lost 1 lb in 3 weeks!
They are still with the original owner, as she does not want to rehome him until he is feeling better.

First, he was diagnosed with an Ulcer, which he was prescribed Amoxicillan for and was given Pepto also. He finished the meds yesterday. However, i got a call from the owner Saturday, saying she was on her way to the vet with him.

She says his symptoms are:
thin mucusy poops
straining to pee with little coming out

I was told by the owner, that he is still eating and drinking, and playing just as he normally does.

The vet did a urine anaylsis, and everything came back fine. She thinks he may have Prolific Bowel Disease, so he was prescribed another antibiotic called, forgive me, i'm going by memory here, Chloramphenicol? If this is what he has, she said that we would see a huge improvement with 48-72 hours.
She sees no improvment in him.

She can no longer foot the bill for this poor boy. I am still going to take him in. Sick or not, i cannot let him go to a shelter. FYI, he is roughly 2 1/2 years old.

Now for my question (finally, i know!)
I know straining to pee is a sign of adrenal.. but what else might be causing this? What could be causing his poops to be the way they are? I know thin poops can be caused by a blockage, but what about this "clear, lube(as in KY jelly she described it) looking" mucus?
He will be going to my vet (not the same one he has been, as we live over an hour away from eachother)
What tests should i ask for? X-ray?

I have 4 ferrets of my own already, but we havent had any problems, so this is new to me.
