She thinks he may have Prolific Bowel Disease, so he was prescribed another antibiotic called, forgive me, i'm going by memory here, Chloramphenicol? If this is what he has, she said that we would see a huge improvement with 48-72 hours.

With proliferative colitis you will see dark stools often containing large amounts of clear or green mucous, straining to defecate, rectal prolapse, lethargy, and weight loss. Treatment is with chloramphenicol for at least 2-3 weeks and supportive care (hand feeding a bland diet, such as chicken baby food or homemade "duck" soup, and giving sub-q fluids). Positive diagnoses of the illness can be made only through surgical biopsy however thickened intestines, which indicate the disease, should show on x-ray. When my Nougat had the illness improvement was seen within the first week, though I'm not sure it was as quick as two to three days time. It may have been closer to one week.

When straining is seen adrenal disease is certainly a possibility, and it is common for small amounts of stools to be passed while straining to urinate. If adrenal disease is the cause the vet should be able to palpate the enlarged prostate.
