Hi Karen,
A few things about the article by Dr S.K. that you provided the
link for (Adrenal disease in ferrets). Two points about the last 2
paragraphs (here's some additional interesting information). The
author assumes that epinephrine is elevated in adrenal gland
disease. This not the case in 99.9% of the cases. Adrenal tumors
that overproduce epinephrine and nor-epinephrine are very rare in
ferrets. They are called pheochromocytomas, and they involve the
adrenal medulla. I had 1 case almost 17 years ago. The very common
adrenal gland disease involves the adrenal cortex and overproduces
the sex hormones and the adrenal androgens (not epi and nor-epi).
The author also speculates that histamine levels are elevated,
but adrenal glands do not produce histamine! Even in those rare cases
of pheochromocytomas, histamine levels are not elevated.
Hope that clears up some confusion,
Jerry Murray, DVM
PS a defect in the P53 tumor suppressor gene has been found
in adrenal ferrets by Dr Wagner at the U of Pitt. MEN is still being
researched at the U of California-Davis.
