Subject: [ferrethealth] Re:Adrenal treatment (LH levels)
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hi Amanda
High levels of hormones from the adrenal glands
do not stimulate the pituitary to produce more LH
and/or FSH. Production of LH and FSH is under
control of GnRH from the hypothalamus. GnRH
production is under control of melatonin. Melatonin
levels are based on the photoperiods input to the
pineal gland. Thus high levels of the sex hormones
and adrenal androgens do not increase LH levels.
It can be confusing, but long day photoperiods (ie the
breeding season, spring/summer) decrease melatonin
levels. Low melatonin levels increase GnRH levels.
High GnRH levels stimulate the production of LH.
High LH levels stimulate the adrenal glands to make
the sex hormones and adrenal androgens. High levels
of the sex hormones and androgens cause the clinical
signs and problems of adrenal gland disease, but it does
not cause even more LH production. Thus LH comes first,
and adrenal gland disease comes second.
Conversely short day photoperiods (ie fall/winter) increase melatonin
levels. High melatonin levels decrease GnRH levels. Low GnRH
levels decrease LH and FSH levels. Low LH levels lowers the
stimulation to the adrenal glands, so the adrenal glands lower
the production of the sex hormones and androgens.
Likewise Lupron works on the pituitary gland to stop LH production, which
in turn stops the stimulation to the adrenal glands. Then the adrenal
glands stop overproducing the sex hormones and androgens.
Hope that clears up the confusion,
Jerry Murray, DVM
