Thank you for the wonderful explanation Dr. Murray! I think I have pinpointed my source of confusion. I was reading that high levels of estrogens stimulate the release of LH, but I missed the point that that is specifically during the breeding cycle, and the estrogens are coming from the ovaries. The sex hormones coming from the adrenal cortex provide a negative feedback on the pituitary gland and actually slow down GnRH release. It's amazing to me how the body has such an intricate system of positive and negative feedback.
