To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
We twice had times in our about 28 years with
ferrets in the family when we were unable to
provide a number of extremely dark places they
could get to any time they wanted. In melatonin
production studies the degree of darkness mattered
with dimness being nowhere as useful as complete
darkness. Anyway, both time about 3 years after
(plus or minus a year) we had a clump of ferrets with
adrenal disease. Do we still run into it even when
providing as much access to darkness as our space
and financial factors permit? Sure, but nowhere near
the levels some others have mentioned. The melatonin
the body produces itself appears to work better than
introduced melatonin.
So, I do think that the stage can be set a few years
before the disease has progressed to the point where
it is symptomatic. That isn't a great surprise; with
humans some types of neoplasia can have their stage set
as much as 30 years before symptoms, for example, lung
tumors from childhood breathing of second-hand smoke.
Plus, in ferrets who have the clumping form of lymphoma
the silent viral exposure appears to happen an average of
about 3 years before the lymphoma appears. Yes, I DO
think that the earlier care in life matters.
Yes, I also think that genetics also plays a role.
Certainly, there is already some study evidence
on that regard and may be more in the future.
Dr. Murray recently mentioned some of that again.
