Beyond treatment options, possible prevention
options under study, and genetics:

There are certainly possible contributory husbandry
factors that have to be taken into account. The need
for darkness is the only one so far that has decent
research reason behind it to consider very strong in
potential, but there are other things with some
research info behind them that can't be forgotten.
In other species providing a lot of exercise is essential for
many aspects of endocrinological health so perhaps
being inactive might increase risk. Another thing that
can affect endocrinological health in many ways is
obesity. Yellow fat is not just an energy storage unit.
It is also a hormone factory and produces compounds
that increase inflammation. I don't know of anyone YET
who has looked at adrenal disease or insulinoma in
relation to activity levels and obesity, but there is a lot of
work indicating that inactivity as measured by muscularity
and obesity can contribute to diabetic problems in cats
and in humans. In cats they appear to be a DIRECT cause
for some.

We try to keep our ferrets physically and mentally active and
not obese. (Acknowledging that a small minority of ferrets
appear to be able to run into obesity with medical causes.)
So, perhaps the way we keep them active also plays a good
role in their endocrinological health.

It seems to me that those who often run into high rates of
adrenal disease or high rates of second adrenal involvement
may be helped if it can be figured out what is different in
the homes which over the years don't have those same problems
at such pronounced levels.
