Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Treatment for adrenal gland disease
To: <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>
I've been reading all these posts indicating how the second gland is always affected after the first one is removed. Is it not feasible to remove the second gland at the same time even if it is healthy at the time of surgery?

In the first place poster do NOT agree
that the second gland is always also
affected. A number of us have only
rarely encountered the second gland
being involved. We are among those.
So, experiences vary widely.
If both adrenal glands come out, or if
one comes out but the other is atrophied
then special treatment must be provided
for life to prevent a fatal Addisons Crisis.
You can begin learning about that in this:
http://www.miamiferret.org/addisons.htm
but there is more to know about it, such as
things that can create a need for higher
levels of med. See past posts on Addison
Disease in
http://ferrethealth.org/archive/
which is very easily used.
Many times the second adrenal is only
reduced in size, debulked, during surgery
and then the meds often are not needed or
only one may be needed. People often do
not realize the difference between a complete
removal and a debulking.]
