Hi Bonnie,
Glad Matti and the folks at Michigan State are on the case.
>From your description I would suspect coccidiosis
from Eimeria furonis. However whether it is Isospora or
Eimeria does not matter that much. Both are treated
with the same medications. Albon, trimethoprim-sulfa,
or ponazuril (Marquis by Bayer) can be used along with
fluids, and hand feeding (turkey or chicken baby food, Hill's
a/d, Oxbow's carnivore care, etc). Carafate and an antacid can
be used to help increase the appetite.
Ponazuril can be used at 20 mg/kg once a day for 2 days or
50 mg/kg just once. To dilute the paste add 1 gram of the paste
to enough water to make 3 mls. This is now 50 mg/ml of water,
which should be enough to treat 3 (1 kg) ferrets. One gram of the
paste is roughly the same size as a Hershey kiss (candy). The
suspension can be stored in the refrigerator for several weeks but
shake well before using.
If it is actually Neospora (usually tested for with a blood test),
you might want to also contact Dr Sharon Patton at the University
of Tennessee. She was doing some work with Neospora in ferrets.
It is usually treated with trimethoprim-sulfa and clindamycin (in dogs).
Hope that helps and keep us posted,
Jerry Murray, DVM
