I am so very, very sorry for the loss of your beloved Badger.

However, I did want to address something you posted, which may mislead others reading it. It may be that given all the stress and heartache perhaps you misunderstood what your vet told you. Or it may be that she is not experienced with ferrets.

Prednisone does suppress the immune system, however, that does not make it contraindicated with antibiotics. I have a ferret with insulinoma who is on prednisolone and diazoxide and who is currently receiving a combination of baytril and amoxicillin (two antibiotics) as well.

In other words a ferret with insulinoma and who develops helicobacter infection/ulcers can be treated for both at the same time.

Pedialyte should never be given with food or water -only by itself and then only at a dose recommended by your vet. See: http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/ferrethealth/message/8444

If indeed he does have an ulcer, do not add kibble, pulverized or otherwise to his diet but continue with the chicken baby food or A/D or a combination of baby food and A/D - pre-treating with carafate/sulcrafate 20-40 minutes before each feeding. He can and should be on antibiotics for a Helicobacter infection.

I have never heard of Helicobacter being diagnosed via blood work.

His weight loss may be grief. If you suspect insulinoma have his BG checked to be certain. And please don't be under the erroneous impression that a ferret with insulinoma receiving pred cannot be on antibiotics. Not true.

My sincerest condolences on your loss.

Tressie
