the majority of filters for fish tanks consist of some type of floss material as well as bits of charcoal...the filters like brita and pur also contain charcoal and or the floss stuff...which is basically the same as the stuffing (batting?? ) used in clothing, comforters and pillows.
water filtered through these types of filters is perfectly fine for the ferrets to drink.
you should be able to look at the packaging of the filter to see exactly what it consists of. if not, contact the company to be sure - i really doubt there's anything other than charcoal in it though (unless things have changed in the past 8 years, which is the last time i had a tank going).
