Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Chordoma

My ferret, Pooka, had developed a chordoma near the base of her tail, which required an almost complete tail amputation. It took quite a while for the fur to grow back on what remains of her tail, but other than some loss of balance (she can't stand up on her hind legs anymore) it went perfectly. There will probably be bruising which will turn bright red several hours after the surgery. It looks very alarming, but it will subside after a couple of days.

It's currently approximately 1 centimeter in diameter. It doesn't seem to bother her at all, but I don't want to take any chances with her injuring it while playing, so we're having the surgery done. If anyone has any helpful tips from experience with this kind of surgery, please pass them along. She goes in early in the morning and comes home later in the afternoon. I'm hoping that the vet doesn't have to remove too much of her tail.
