Subject: [ferrethealth] What to feed - Ferret Nuitrition question
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I have a three yr old female ferret with a severe adversion to chicken-based diets. She would vomit and had chronic loose, seedy stool. She is on 0.3 mL prednisolone now (0.3 mg dose) I have tried vet prescribed z/d, but she hated it and I wasn't fond of all the grains in it. I had her on totally ferret turkey and venison, which she did like, but again, I wasn't happy with the corn and potatoes in it. Also, it has a lot of Omega-6 fatty acids in it, which I thought were bad as they caused renal problems (this is based off of a link I found in the FHL archives, message number YG10319. The link is http://www.texasferret.org/news/199801.shtml)

As you all can imagine, a GOOD, chicken free diet is hard to come by. For the past year I have been feeding her a mix of nature's advantage freeze-dried beef nibblets and wysong dream treats in beef.

I am posting this to ask if having a beef based diet is bad for her? I read in the link from the aforementioned FHL post that lamb based diets are better than beef, but I cannot find such stuff. I know nature's variety has a number of lamb products, but they all contain various fruits and vegetables, which I know my ferret does not need.

If anyone has any UP TO DATE (the link I have discussed is over 10 yrs old) info on ferret nuitritional requirements and recommendations, that would be great. Please email me personally with your own diet suggestions, as I don't think the FHL is a place to discuss what we all feed our kids.

Thanks!
Amanda and Izzy B
