Subject: [ferrethealth] Darkness
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hello Group!

>From some of the past posts it is clear that ferrets need access to complete darkness, is that correct? For at least 14 hours a day? Is this only for sleep purposes?

Will a thick blankie be enough, an enclosed hanging box type of hammy? Do they need a nest box?

My ferrets usually sleep under the blankies or somewhere covered, but not always, sometimes they sleep on top of the blankies or on top of the standard hammock. During the day there is light that comes in around the blinds (I keep them closed but there is light that comes in. I have taken to closing the door to their room after dark when the lights from the rest of the house might come in even though it is dark outside. What else can I do?

Thanks everyone for your participation on this list, it is very helpful to a "lurker" such as myself.

Tony

[Anything that provides the access to complete darkness is
a good idea, whether it is bedding, or bedding in a dark place
or a dark drape in front of a dark place like under a legged trunk,
or a nest box and bedding.

Be sure to keep the location cool enough that overheating will
not happen and that the arrangement allows enough ventilation.
