Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Still concerned about Whitey
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I wouldn't give pepto at the same time as other meds. It is designed as a coating agent and is protective and it could block some of the absorption just as Carafate can. Also give it on an empty stomach like Carafate it works better.

Insulinoma is possible but should have been looked into even before surgery but he is also on Pred and thus the treatment for it initially, so if it was it should help. Now there is a difference between prednisone and prednisolone. The former needs conversion by the liver to the active form and it sounds like surgery found an issue with the liver so which would make it not effective. In all cases I prefer prednisolone I think it works better so check with your vet and see which one you have.

Lastly, has your kid been checked for heart problems? A lot of what you describe could be some form of cardiac disease this should be looked into and since he had surgery it could have exacerbated it.

Always learn to trust your gut feeling. You know your own pets and if you feel there is something going on there probably is it just hasn't been found yet. Best to you and Whitey.

The vet found swelling of the liver, lymph node and took biopsies of these and the stomach and the tests came back indicitive of IBD. She put him on a 21 day course of amoxicillian, flagl, pepto and on prednisone forever. He had his surgery on July 13th and at first he seemed better, but to further explain he never really acted to sick, he just wasn't eating or drinking on his own, but I was feeding him duck soup and he was eating that. So he still played some, but not as much as usual because he is a high energy ferret and runs and plays and dooks all the time. So he was started to show signs of lethargy. Anyway, after surgery he slept mostly for the first few days, then he seemed back to normal wanting to play and run around, he even tried to climb which was a no no, due to the surgery
. This was on the 16, 17 and 18 then after that he seemed to get tired again and doesn't play again. I get him out every morning at 9:30 am for med, again at 2:00pm to play, again at 5:30pm for meds, again at 9:00pm to play and lastly 1:30am for meds again. Each time he gets out he will eat, take his meds, runs around for about 15 minutes and then he's done and goes and lays down in the closet and go to sleep. Why is he doing this and why does he not seem to be getting better. I realize that he had a major surgery, but everyone says that ferrets bounce back rather quickly and this doesn't seem the case. Also, I might mention that he is being treated for heliobactor bacteria and that is what the meds are for, but I read somewhere that if you give pepto with the antibiotics it could bind with the meds and render them ineffective. Does anyone know anything about this. I mean after 1600.00 in vet bills I just don't know what more I can do. If I am unable to treat him any
more I will have to find someone to take him or the other, and I do not want to do this. I love him so much and this is a constant worry to me and I just can't seem to shake the feeling that there is something else going on, but I don't know if I should listen. Please if anyone can give me any advice or info on this subject. Also, I was ready about ferret diseases and ready some of the signs for Insulinoma and I notice that he seems to stare into space a lot. He is deaf and I thought it was just a deaf thing, you know sensing vibes or something. I don't notice any other symptoms, but when he does this he is just running or something and stop and just styme out, like he's staring and will do this sometimes for 15 or 20 seconds then go on about his business. Thanks for all you prayers and please continue to pray for him. I don't want to think about losing him, but it seems like this is never going to get better.
