Subject: [ferrethealth] adrenalectomy complication
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

My little girl, Izzy B, 3 yrs old, went in for an adrenalectomy today. The vet and I thought that while surgery has the biggest potential risks (especially if the right adrenal is affected), it also has the biggest potential payoff in terms of being symptom free for a long period of time, especially since she is young and healthy (besides issues with IBD).

Well, the surgery did not go as well as it should have. Both of her adrenals were enlarged. Left one came out no problem. My vet has done a large number of right adrenalectomies (or at least removing as much as possible) and he has never had a problem. Unfortunately, there was a problem with my Izzy. While trying to remove the right one her vena cava hemorrhaged (it must have torn or something). The were able to ligate the vena cave off and stop the bleed. She was stabilized and is now waking from surgery. But if her body doesn't have good collateral circulation through other vessels, she will not make it. We are playing the waiting game now.

I post this to remind everyone of the potential complications with surgery on adrenal kids. Albeit, complications are rare, but we all need to be reminded that they can happen. I don't regret doing the surgery.....but I am a very very sad ferret mom right now.

Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers.
