Two vets my ferrets have seen, including the one (now retired) who
pioneered right adrenal surgery in ferrets would always ligate the
vena cava before attempting to remove the right gland with
conventional microsurgery. (Cryo is a different matter.) I get the
impression that wasn't done initially with Izzy. It might be worth
discussing with your vet in a polite way that doesn't second guess his
skills.

**While it's always a good idea to discuss surgical procedures with your
vet, I will say that I have almost never ligated the vena cava, and the few
cases in which I have done so, there was already well established collateral
circulation due to occlusion of the vein by the adrenal mass. Doing so can
be extremely life threatening, as it vastly reduces blood flow back to the
heart from the back half of the body and causes stagnation of blood, as well
as greatly reduced blood flow to the brain, lungs, etc.

Now what I have done frequently is a temporary clamp on the vena cava and
vascular surgery to remove the mass and sew the vena cava back together.
This is extremely delicate surgery, but I have had great success with it.

Unfortunately, right adrenal surgery is a procedure that can be fraught
with complications, and even in the best surgeon's hands, things can go wrong.

I do hope that the ferret in this discussion makes it - the fact that she
is recovering from anesthetic at all is a good sign.
